Home Remedies For Sinus Infection

Millions of people are made miserable by the painful and discomforting inflammation of the sinus passages, and the excessive secretion of mucus in the nose and throat as a result of having a sinus infection.

You may want to try one of the many home remedies used through the years and avoid the high cost, adverse side effects, and the time needed to visit a doctor in order to get a prescription for a round of antibiotics and decongestants.

Break up sinus congestion by mixing one or two drops of peppermint oil with some olive oil, and massage into the sinus above the eyes and around the nose.

A tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with half a cup of water, or half a cup of apple juice used several times a day, will help to expel your mucus easier.

A glass of hot lemonade made in the manner that you would make regular lemonade, but using hot water instead of cold will have a soothing effect during a sinus problem

Relief can be found by inhaling steam several times a day using a vaporizer, or by boiling water in a teapot, bowl, or pan, and placing your head in a position to inhale the steam vapors. A second method would be to hold a wet warm washcloth lightly over your nose and mouth for a few deep breaths, pause, and do it again several times.

A saline nasal spray in each nostril will provide some help, but the best home remedy is a mechanical treatment, called nasal irrigation (saline rinses of your sinuses).

The best approach is to purchase a Neti-Pot
(a pot made for nasal irrigation). These pots are perfectly formed for tipping into a nostril.

Use the directions that come with your irrigation unit, but general directions are listed below:
Saline Solution:
Mix 1/2 teaspoon of coarsely ground salt (kosher salt) with 8 ounces of warm water until the salt is completely dissolved.
Turn your head to one side over the sink, so that one nostril moves up toward the ceiling.
Slowly pour the saline solution into the upper nostril and let it flow out through the lower nostril.
When the pot is empty, blow out through both nostrils into the sink or into a tissue or handkerchief. Be sure
not to close either nostril as you blow out.

It is a good idea for your diet to include more carrots, leafy vegetables, tomatoes, mangoes, papaya, yoghurt, and any other foods containing vitamin A.
