| When a child
doesnt get his way,
he gets upset. This is
normal, but if a minor
fit escalates to a point
where the child is out of
control, its called
a temper tantrum. Suddenly,
nothing you do seems to
help. You cant hold
them, sooth them,
distract them, or even
threaten them. It can be
so frustrating and
embarrassing that you
nearly want to throw your
own tantrum.
To deal
with this situation, you
need to take a step back.
What is really happening?
This little person wants
to have their way -
really bad, apparently
- and cant
seem to understand why
you wont give in.

So,
what can you do?
Well, one
solution is to try ignoring them.
This may work if they are not
endangering themselves or others
and there arent a lot of
people around. Since tantrums are
an inappropriate way to get your
attention, ignoring them will
teach them that it doesn't work.
However, if you
must take action, remember that a
child has a very short attention
span. A sudden change of
circumstances can make them
forget, to a certain extent, the
original episode. I am not
talking about a bribe, such as,
"here, look at this."
Im talking about an extreme
change. It has to be something
they absolutely cant
ignore.
| Examples may
include: - Turning on the
radio and dancing with
them vigorously
-
Swinging them around
quickly (and carefully,
of course)
-
Stepping outside into the
fresh air, especially if
it's cold outside
-
Giving them a bath
|
|
| - Giving them a
bath - Learn a couple
of wrestling moves and
pin them to the ground
As soon
as they pause, give them
a big hug and tell them
you love them.
This
solution isnt
foolproof, but works most
of the time. The most
important thing is that
you control yourself.
Dont get upset and
dont give in.
